Executive Director Position
Position Responsibilities:
Hands On Bay Area is looking for much more than an operating executive—we are seeking an entrepreneurial leader who can help envision the organization’s future and mobilize stakeholders and resources to get there. The Executive Director will take responsibility for the development of a new strategic plan that will lay the groundwork for organizational growth. In addition, the Executive Director will develop relationships with Hands On supporters, create partnerships, and serve as an inspirational advocate for community service in the Bay Area. The Executive Director will have ultimate accountability for effective internal operations, including finance, board relations and development, and human resources, as well as external operations, including program development, marketing and fundraising. Hands On Bay Area’s Board and staff of 14 are energetic and entrepreneurial — the successful candidate will be as well. |
Organizational Leadership and Management
|
Lead Hands On Bay Area through the development, implementation and monitoring of strategic and operational plans |
|
Work with the management team to develop annual work plans tied to the strategic plan |
|
Lead and manage a strong, collaborative staff that benefits from direction and support |
|
Resource Development
|
Actively partner with the management team and Board to secure the financial resources needed to support the organization |
|
Cultivate relationships with private and corporate foundations and work with the Development Director and Corporate Relations Director to solicit grants and sponsorships |
|
Steward and deepen relationships with major individual donors |
|
Support the growth of HOBA’s fee-for-service corporate volunteer program, which represents a significant portion of the organizations revenue |
|
External Relations and Outreach
|
Serve as an effective spokesperson and ambassador for the organization |
|
Serve as an inspirational advocate for community service on a local and national level |
|
Maintain positive relationships with the Hands On Network as well as community and corporate partners |
|
Finance and Operations
|
Develop organizational budget in partnership with management team, the Treasurer and Finance Committee, and monitor monthly financial statements |
|
Work with COO to oversee HR functions and manage a staff of at least 14 |
|
Board of Directors
|
Work in partnership with Board of Directors to develop and implement HOBA’s strategy, policy, and procedures |
|
Prepare regular financial and organizational reports |
|
Assist with Board development and recruitment |
|
Programming
|
Understand current and emerging needs of Bay Area communities and make sure Hands On’s programs are aligned with these needs |
|
Inspire and engage Hands On’s deeply committed volunteers |
|
Profile of the Successful Candidate:

A passion for civic engagement and the role volunteers play in communities and social change |
|
An inspirational leader that is capable of being a visible evangelist for volunteerism in the community |
|
A strategic visionary that has effectively leveraged nonprofit boards and engaged multiple stakeholders in the mission and vision of an organization |
|
A hands-on and collaborative leader that has lead and managed a rapidly growing and under-staffed organization |
|
A track-record of success in nonprofit fundraising |
|
Experience implementing effective marketing programs |
|
Experience in the field of volunteer management |
|
Strong oral and written communication skills |
|
Strong facilitative skills |
Additionally, the successful candidate will have:
|
A bachelor’s degree, and likely, an advanced degree |
|
Minimum 7-10 years of management experience |
|
