Agency Partners
The Basics
Hands On Bay Area (HOBA) offers its nonprofit agency partners two types of volunteer engagement opportunities:
Community Calendar Programs – ongoing volunteer projects, service-learning and leadership-development opportunities. Read more.
Corporate Programs – projects that employees of HOBA's Hands At Work corporate clients can complete in one day. Read more.
HOBA is not a volunteer opportunity clearinghouse. We seek to build partnerships with community agencies interested in our Community Calendar Program or Corporate Program. If you are simply looking for a place to list your agency's volunteer opportunities, please contact the Volunteer Center in your area.
Interested in partnering with HOBA? Contact your region's program manager. |

Agency Guidelines
All partner agencies are registered 501(c) 3 organizations; government departments or programs; or schools. |
Do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital or veteran status, or the presence of a non-related medical condition or disability. |
Ensure that the actual tasks given to volunteers are consistent with the project description. |
Provide a representative on site for the full duration of the project and help educate volunteers by presenting a brief introduction (5 minutes) about the organization and the particular project. |
Provide sufficient tools and facilities (like restrooms), unless agreed-to with HOBA ahead of time. |
Take responsibility for paying for required back-ground checks or fingerprinting. |
How can my nonprofit participate in the Community Calendar Program?
Hands On Bay Area reviews its Community Calendar of ongoing projects on a regular basis and is always looking for new opportunities for our volunteers. Although every agency and volunteer opportunity is unique, the following basic project criteria are used in determining future HOBA calendar projects.
Project location must be in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa or Marin Counties. |
Project hours: Weeknights - after 5:30pm (2-3 hours), Weekends - between 8am-4pm. (2-5 hours). |
Work with Hands On Bay Area to schedule projects or service-learning events at least 4 times each calendar year. |
Project must be able to accommodate a minimum of 4 volunteers. |
Project must NOT require volunteers to attend a separate and extensive agency orientation. |
There must be an agency staff present at all times during the project to oversee the project and an agency contact prior to the project who will be able to answer questions from the HOBA Project Leader. |
Project must begin and end in accordance to the agreement of HOBA and the agency. |
Project must be set up at least 6-8 weeks ahead of time in order to be added in our monthly calendar. |
Most general and all specialized supplies, materials and recreation fees must be provided by the agency unless previously discussed and approved by a HOBA staff member. |
The project must NOT be a fundraising or political event. (Please note that we will be able to post up to three fundraising events under a special section of our weekly email called Community Corner). |
* Please note that space availability, as well as volunteer interest, play a part in choosing volunteer projects for our Community Calendar.
How can my nonprofit get corporate groups to volunteer?
Hands On Bay Area's corporate projects are a great opportunity to do the major projects your agency has been putting off. Ideas include painting, cleaning and gardening.
It is amazing what a large group of folks (usually 25 or more) can do to transform your agency or school. Corporate volunteers are not a good choice for your pre-planned events that have a specific date and time. They work well for projects that can be done on a flexible schedule. Please contact your region's program manager to help you choose appropriate projects.
Please note:
Our corporate partners select the projects they want to work on, not Hands On Bay Area. However, the more clearly defined the project scope, the easier it is to pique the corporation's interest. |
Project location can be in any of the 9 Bay area counties (or even a little beyond). Project location depends upon the corporate partner's needs. |
The vast majority of corporate projects are done during the Monday thru Friday, 9-5 work week. |
In general these are projects for large groups – 25 or more people at a time. |
Projects should be structured to be done in a day and to have a big, tangible impact on your organization. |
Projects must NOT require volunteers to attend a separate agency orientation. |
Projects must NOT require fingerprinting or background checks. |
Generally (but not always) all reasonable project supplies will be covered – this is great for painting and gardening projects. |
Most general and all specialized supplies, materials and recreation fees must be provided by the agency unless previously discussed and approved by a HOBA staff member. |
Projects must NOT use scaffolding or power tools. |
Hands On Bay Area can provide the tools necessary to do most projects. |
An agency representative must be present for the entire duration of the project. |
These projects must NOT be a fundraising or political event. |
Do you have a contractor who works with your agency? If they are willing to teach and direct volunteers there is an opportunity to do even more involved projects then HOBA can normally support. |
